Fishing the moon phases in Costa Rica is always an interesting conversation. I have clients that will only fish the New Moon when booking their Quepos Fishing Package and never on the Full Moon. The reason behind this is the light of the Full Moon draws the bait fish to the surface waters which of course attracts the feeding Billfish and they feed during the dark hours of the night and then in the light hours they are not hungry so the daytime bite during the full moon is considered productive, where during the New Moon when the sky is darkest the daytime fishing can be more productive. I have some anglers that are adament about it fishing the New Moon that is. Others who are in Costa Rica on Vacation and enjoying being in the Sportfishing Capital don’t consider the Moon when planning. I have seen for instance the 2014 January, February, March and April Full Moons equally productive as the New Moon. So you might be swayed to think that it does not make a huge difference. This month we had charters for 3 days around the Full Moon and each charter had a couple of bites but no releases which reverts one back to thinking to fish the New Moon.
